Objectives
(1) To identify and analyze communication problems as they appear in video recordings of the spoken discourse of student-patient and student-tutor communication in ward-teaching. In particular, the research will focus on the special needs of students where the medium of student-patient communication is Cantonese, while the student-tutor medium is English. The project is thus unique in the sphere of medical commnication in having a translingual orientation. (2) To develop appropriate teaching tasks and materials for the English enhancement course derived from a close analysis of the discourse situation.
