Objectives
To develop an animal model to study the distribution of free bilirubin between plasma and various organs and tissues. Results could improve our understanding of the mechanism of development of kernicterus in newborn infants; to develop tissue culture model to study the effect of protein-bound and unbound bilirubin on human cells. Results could confirm the importance of free bilirubin in producing brain damage in jaundiced infants.
