Objectives
To establish a scientific basis for fish culture practice through studies on the basic physiology, biochemistry and cellular mechanisms involved in adjustments to changes in environmental conditions and mobilization of body reserves to the gonads during induced sexual development - with results directly useful to modern fish farming; to identify long term natural changes in marine community ecology in Hong Kong; to assess the hidden effects of marine pollution and to use this information to understand how pollution acts to regulate community structure in the marine sub-tropics; to elucidate the relationships between marine water quality and the ecology of phytoplankton communities so as to identify pollution indicator species, the results of which have immediate relevance to pollution monitoring, fisheries and mariculture management and recreational use of the marine environment.
