Objectives
To determine if the incidence of confined placental mosaicism in pregnancies complicated by fetal growth retardation and intrauterine death is significantly increased compared with incidence found in a control group of normal pregnancies delivering at term, and if so, whether placental tissue karyotpying should be part of the routine investigation in this cases; to examine the relationship between confined placental mosaicism and the obstetrical complications such as pre-eclampsia in pregnancies that resulted in a growth retarded or dead fetus; to determine if specific chromosomes are involved in the confined placental mosaicism that resulted in an adverse pregnancy outcome; to determine if the occurrence of confined placental mosaicism is related to certain epidemiological factors such as maternal age, socio-economic status, past obstetrical performance, and maternal nutritional status as reflected by the body mass index and haemoglobin at booking.
