Objectives
1) The primary objective is to prepare a scholarly monograph that will make an important contribution to ‘law and film’-studies; the cultural study of law; film criticism; legal history; constitutional law; as well as the wider study of Hong Kong culture and colonial legal culture, by asking the following questions: 2) How is law represented in Hong Kong films of this period? 3) What are the benefits and pitfalls of using film as a primary source for understanding legal history? 4) In what ways does film language such as camera movement, sound, graphics and lighting contribute to a representation of law unique to the genre? 5) How might knowledge of concepts and debates in constitutional law inform our understanding of film? 6) How do films reflect, and participate in, the formation of a distinct Hong Kong identity? 7) What, ultimately, is the relationship between law and film as revealed by their interaction in this period?
