Objectives
1) To present an insightful and coherent sociolinguistic account of language as a medium and form of expression in the visual arts. 2) To broaden the scope of theorizing of key concepts in sociolinguistics: creativity in discourse; linguistic performance; indexicality; language ideologies; mediation and materiality. 3) To bridge the gap between art historical and sociolinguistic approaches to text-based art. 4) To complete up to two journal papers and a book manuscript on ‘language and art’.
