Objectives
1) To track the rise of learned womanhood in mercantile lineages from Huizhou; 2) To map the migration of these women’s families into China’s cultural and economic heartland; 3) To illustrate these women’s exertion of cultural power and their interactions with local elite societies; 4) To exemplify their strategies of attaining social success for both themselves and their families; 5) To probe into cases that typified the gender dynamics underlying the interplays of money, culture, and social ascendancy in this cultural and economic heartland.
