Objectives
1) To rethink the role of seriality in the Victorian novel and its relationship to national identity and Anderson’s theory of seriality in creating national identity. 2) To rethink theories of nationalism and the role of cultural artifacts in constructing a national subjectivity through the lens of Victorian literature. 3) To trace the relationship between the expanding literary marketplace and the Victorian serial novel. 4) To identify a break between high and low literature earlier than often suggested, and to highlight the complex rhetoric around this internally incoherent break.
