Objectives
1) To design and optimize the thin-film platform for Fabry-Pérot and whispering-gallery mode optical micro-cavities: this include optimization of the geometries and dimensions of the cavities with the aid of simulations, optimization of the fabrication sequences and processes to ensure surface and facet smoothness; 2) To demonstrate high-quality Fabry-Pérot and whispering gallery mode resonances and lasing from the thin-film microdisk structures: the project aims at demonstrating single and multi-mode whispering galley mode lasing with record-breaking high quality factors and ultra-low lasing thresholds; 3) To develop novel methods of assessing the confinement quality of a whispering-gallery optical cavity: this include the use of scanning near-field optical microscopy/ spectroscopy to detect whispering-gallery emission at the nanometer range for mapping of field pattern and mode order identification, as well as the multiple probe collection strategy to maximize the whispering-gallery signal in the far-field.
