Objectives
1 Develop an o-afMRI protocol that integrates (i) optogenetic inhibition or excitation of pyramidal neurons in the AC and VC regions; and (ii) fMRI characterization of basic auditory processing functions in the IC, including gain of response and response selectivity to species-specific vocalizations. 2 Employ fMRI to characterize the functional influences of AC descending projections on IC auditory processing: Determine how auditory processing functions in all bilateral IC subdivisions are modulated by optogenetically manipulating the pyramidal neurons in three AC regions (Au1, AuD and Auv). 3 Employ fMRI to characterize the functional influences of VC cross-modal descending projections on IC auditory processing: Determine how auditory processing functions in IC subdivisions are modulated by optogenetically manipulating the pyramidal neurons in one secondary VC region (V2L).
