| Abstract | Are value systems around the world similar to one another? Many find this question tricky to answer. On the one hand, without a sense that humans generally share similar or the same values, there is the risk of sliding into cultural relativism, the notion that “anything goes” across cultures, and thus there is no point in trying to engage in significant cross-cultural deliberation about the things that matter most to people around the world. On the other hand, without a foundational understanding of more than one cultural tradition, it can be difficult to compare traditions to each other respectfully and fairly without inadvertently assimilating different views into one’s own tradition. |
