AbstractIn this paper, a mathematical model is developed for an inventory system in which the demand during the stockout period is partially backordered. Two cases are considered to account for the variability in the quantity backordered. In the first case it is assumed that the standard deviation of the quantity backordered is independent of the cumulative shortage while in the second case the standard deviation of the quantity backordered is assumed to be proportional to the cumulative shortage. Optimal replenishment policies are synthesized for both cases. A numerical example is used to illustrate the theory. © 1986.
