Abstract: The thesis examines the history of Chi Lin Buddhist Free School, followed by Buddhist Chi Lin School, which was founded in 1947, and closed in 1994, when Diamond Hill area was replanned. Buddhist Chi Lin School (formerly called Chi Lin Buddhist Free School) has been serving Diamond Hill area for half century. The school began its service from providing children with no schooling eventually developed into primary school education to adapt to community’s need. The school was closed due to the development of Tate’s Cairn Tunnel and redevelopment of Diamond Hill old area.
In the thesis, I used the post-war primary education development and Buddhism free school as the starting point with Chi Lin Buddhist free school and school development as example to reflect Hong Kong primary school education development and related history. Through verbal interview, photo portrait and other related resources to visualize and recognize the demolished Buddhist Chi Lin School which have served the Diamond Hill Squatter area for 50 years. The research is using the information and finding of recent interviews with teacher and alumni, 40th anniversary school magazine, photos, newspapers and student handbook etc., being the main historical resources in investigating the features and development of the school in 2 stages: Chi Lin Buddhist Free School and Buddhist Chi Lin School.2021-01-01T00:00:00ZThe transformation of the concept of "human rights" in China and its implications on the right to privacy = 論「人權」 觀念在中國的轉化對私隱權的啟示

Abstract: Going through briefly how the concept of rights was invented, transformed and enshrined in milestone human-rights-related documents in the west, this dissertation reveals that the introduction of the modern concepts of “rights” and “human rights” to China during the late Qing and early republican periods adopted a utilitarian approach, emphasizing their values in serving the emerging Chinese nation in its process of nation-building, and those not contributing to this process would not be taken seriously by the intellectuals and the public. With this observation, the thesis advances that the adoption of foreign ideas in China usually required their recognition in the social discourse of national interests. Coupled with an anthropological analysis of the concept of “privacy” in recent Chinese surveys, it further argues that privacy in the Chinese context was more sociological and relationship-influenced than that in the west, which was human-rights-oriented. Taking reference from the philosophical debate on “public” (gōng) versus “private” (sī) in China, it anticipates that the future development of privacy protection in China would inevitably be influenced by traditional Chinese philosophical narratives as well as the given socio-political factors and guided by the stated national priorities. As a result, the conception of “personality” (réngé) might be a more cogent force than human rights in defining privacy.
2023-01-01T00:00:00ZChristianity and counter-narcotics work in Republican China : a case study of the National Anti-Opium Association of China = 基督教界與民國禁毒事業 : 以中華國民拒毒會為個案的研究

Abstract: In the 21st century, regular haircutting is part of most people’s routine. People are expected to have choices of their hairstyle. Therefore, it could be inconceivable to associate haircutting with liberation. Towards the end of the Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China (ROC), there was an upsurge in haircutting. In 1912, male was being ordered by the Provisional Government of the ROC to cut their braids as a symbol of extricating themselves from the Manchu political system. Nevertheless, haircutting in female did not imply the same level of political significance as male and the initiator was inconclusive. Through the propaganda of gender equity by the intellectuals, and the fact that education was more readily accessible by women, haircutting in women had gradually became a trend. Female began to develop a sense of independence and were eager to gain the autonomy over their body. The aim of this article is to investigate the behaviour of haircutting in women through newspaper records between 1920-1930; and to discuss the relationship between haircutting, education and women’s liberation from a physical discipline’s perspective.2023-01-01T00:00:00Z
