Objectives
Aging is the major risk factor of many diseases such as cardiovascular diseases (e.g. hypertension, heart failure, atherosclerosis), neurological disorders (e.g. stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease), cancer, diabetes mellitus and so on. Radical treatment is not available for those health problems. Besides, hospitalization, rehabilitation and long-term medication increase the financial burden to individual, healthcare system and Government. Amauroderma rugosum is a type of Linzhi which is rarely studied. In this project, we will collaborate with our industrial partner to study Amauroderma rugosum, which is originated and cultured in Hong Kong. The objectives are to find out its pharmacological effects and active ingredient(s). To achieve the intended objectives, a series of experiments will be carried out to examine the antioxidant, mitochondrial protective and anti-inflammatory effects of Amauroderma rugosum extract and study its potential benefits, particularly on aging-related problems such as cardiovascular diseases, brain diseases and cancer. In addition, chemical analysis will be carried out to isolate and characterize the active ingredient(s) which are responsible for the anti-aging effects of Amauroderma rugosum. The research findings will be translated into cost-effective, safe and reliable anti-aging healthcare products in the future, which are 100% manufactured in Hong Kong.
