Objectives
1 To determine the spatial distribution and relationships of Neoproterozoic and early Paleozoic sedimentary strata in the Tiekelike and Altyn-Tagh areas at the southwestern and southeastern margins of the Tarim Block, respectively 2 To carry out extensive field-based structural investigations on Neoproterozoic and early Paleozoic sedimentary strata in the Tiekelike and Altyn-Tagh areas and determine the nature of major structural episodes through detailed structural analysis, especially on the early deformation phases which are critical to determining the polarity of the subduciton if the Proto-Tethys Ocean 3 To judge and restore the paleocurrent direction by studying asymmetry wave ripples, oblique beddings and cross beddings on the basis of eliminating structural effects 4 To discriminate the tectonic settings of Neoproterozoic and early Paleozoic sedimentary strata in the Tiekelike and Altyn-Tagh areas on the basis of the modal detrital content and whole-rock geochemical analyses 5 To constrain the age of the provenance transition based on U-Pb dating results of detrital zircons combined with paleocurrent direction data 6 To reveal subduction and accretion processes at depth via zircon hafnium (Hf) and oxygen (O) isotopes linked to age data; and 7 To determine the paleogeographic position of the Tarim Block with respect to Gondwana and their amalgamation time in the Early Paleozoic through a comprehensive comparison with detrital zircon data from other components of Gondwana, combined with available magmatic, metamorphic and structural data
