Professor Walter Lam 林宇恒
Dr. Walter Lam is a Clinical Assistant Professor in Prosthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong (HKU). As a clinician, he is a specialist in Prosthodontics and holds Fellowships from College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.
As an educator, he has been involved extensively in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate specialist training. He is the year director of BDS year 3, deputy chief examiner of BDS year 4 as well as the course coordinator of the CAD/CAM dentistry and removable partial dentures. He is a Fellow in Advanced Higher Education (FHEA) and currently served as an FHEA mentor at HKU.
As a researcher, his research themes include Prosthodontics, Digital Dentistry, and Artificial Intelligence. He has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed indexed journals and holds 4 patents. His team received several prestigious research prizes including The Neal Garrett Clinical Research Prize at International Association for Dental Research. He is the pioneer in the development of virtual dental patients, and the application of artificial intelligence in dental disease detection and tooth replacement.
In the dental community, he served as the member of Science committee, World Dental Federation (FDI). He is also the Editorial Board Member, Digital Dentistry Section, Journal of Dentistry and BMC Oral Health (Both Q1 in dentistry), and the Secretary/Treasurer, Digital Dentistry Research Network, International Association of Dental Research (IADR). He is the founding member of the HKU Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science and represents Hong Kong in the ITU/WHO Focus Group on artificial intelligence for health (FG-AI4H) and Dental CAD/CAM Systems (TC 06/SC 9), International Standard Organization (ISO). He is an international dental advisor and examiner of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Secretary, Continue Medical Education Subcommittee, College of Dental Surgeon Hong Kong, and Secretary of the Hong Kong Prosthetic Dentistry Society. He has been invited to speak at many local and international organizations including a FDI speaker in The Global Continuing Dental Education Programme.
