These theoretical concerns developed from his earlier work on the state's management of space and the formation of national citizenries in Southeast Europe, a subject on which he has written and lectured extensively
- Biotechnology and society, particularly the ways in which externally-directed technologies have been variously absorbed, resisted, rejected or modified in different social settings
- Experimentation and biomedicine, the evolution of laboratory space
