AbstractA permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is applied to drive air-condition compressor in high speed operation for electric vehicle applications. In order to improve the performance, efficiency and reliability of the PMSM-compressor drive, a set of control strategies are developed. A double mode over-modulation method is proposed to enhance the voltage transfer ratio of PWM inverter and the output torque capability of PMSM during high speed operation. A model reference adaptive system (MRAS) method is used to estimate rotor position to realize sensorless drive. A feedforward compensation strategy with maxim torque per ampere (MTPA) control and flux weakening control is proposed for high speed stable operation of PMSM-compressor drive with low power loss. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of these control strategies. © 2008 IEEE.
