AbstractThe beam displacement at visible wavelengths on a metal-air interface was investigated. As the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was excited, a large positive and negative lateral beam displacement was observed on the silver-air interface. The optimal thickness for minimal resonant reflection was identified as the critical thickness. The large observed bidirectional beam displacements indicated the existence of forward and backward surface propagating waves at the surface plasmon resonance of the metal.
