AbstractThe influenza virus causes infections in all age groups, and disease severity is greatest in young children and older adults. In children younger than 5 years, influenza is associated with an average of 100 000 respiratory deaths1 and as many as 1 million hospital admissions annually.2 Notwithstanding those statistics, most influenza virus infections in children are mild and self-limiting.
