AbstractThe statistical cue of phonological neighborhood density (PND) impacts the emerging lexicons of toddlers learning Indo-European languages (e.g., English, French, Danish). Little is known about whether children learning Sino-Tibetan (tone) languages use similar cues. We tracked one Man- darin-speaking child longitudinally from 23-40 months. Despite vast differences in the phonological structures across these diverse languages, the same statistical cues were identified.
