AbstractThe growth directions of ultrathin ZnSe nanowires synthesized using Au-catalyzed molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), exhibit strong dependence on their diameter and growth temperature. The growth temperature, which is a very important factor in the formation of high-quality ZnSe nanowires, also have significant effects on the nanowire growth direction. This must be higher than the eutectic point of the Au-NW material to form alloy droplets. The initial growth direction of ultrathin ZnSe NWs are dependent on the their diameter at a specific growth temperature. It was observed that the growth of ZnSe NWs is driven by the minimum state of the total surface energy and the interfacial energy of the NW. The liquid-solid interface structure at the catalytic tips of the NWs controls the transition of the NW growth direction.
