AbstractHydrodynamic dispersion of a passive tracer in Bernard-Marangoni convection is studied experimentally. Full spreading of the colouring in convective hexagonal cells is the result of two effects: firstly, diffusion in one given cell from streamline to streamline; secondly, transport of the tracer from one cell to its neighbour by diffusion through the common border. The general path of a tracer from the colouring source zig-zags even if the cells are set along a straight line.
