AbstractThe preparation and characterization of trans-[RuVI(bpy)2O2]2+ (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) are described. The observed high Ef ° value (1.25 V vs. NHE) for the trans-[RuVI(bpy)2O]2 2+/trans-[RuIV(bpy)2O(OH2)] 2+ couple indicates that trans-[RuVI(bpy)2O2]2+ is potentially useful for the photocatalytic splitting of water to oxygen. © 1986 American Chemical Society.
