AbstractAIM: To investigate the prevalence and severity of developmental defects of enamel (DDE) among Hong Kong children (0.5 ppm fluoride in drinking water since 1988). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A random sample of 668, 12-year-old children was recruited from 45 secondary schools. The incisors and first molars were examined for DDE by one trained and calibrated examiner. The diagnostic criteria were based on the modified FDI (DDE) Index. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the University of Hong Kong (IRB reference number: UW 11-070). RESULTS: The mouth prevalence for all types of DDE was 89.8%. The mean number of teeth affected by DDE per subject was 8.3 ± 4.24. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of the 12-year-old secondary school students in Hong Kong presented with DDE.
