AbstractHalliday’s linguistic theory of ‘grammatical metaphor’ and his discussion of the pivotal role that grammatical metaphor plays in the abstraction and technicalization of the language of science have been key theoretical resources informing the linguistic analysis of English academic language. In this presentation, I discuss the strategic role that a formal variety of Cantonese can play in scaffolding students’ development of formal academic literacy in educational contexts by examining the kinds of grammatical metaphors used in formal spoken Cantonese registers such as news broadcasts and political speeches in Hong Kong and how these grammatical metaphors can be connected to grammatical metaphors in formal academic language in educational settings.
