Among various types of media texts, the special nature of television advertisements made it became the most controversial one in the debate of gender stereotypes of power relations.
In order to deconstruct the way that television advertisements lead to female subordination, this study conducted a content analysis on samples of television advertisements broadcasted on a local free television channel in Hong Kong. In this study, a systematic coding scheme was made by selectively adopting different attributes originated from previous studies. Different attributes in the coding scheme were used for the identification and analysis of stereotypes leading to female subordination.
Results of this study revealed that stereotypes with hidden power relations, which could lead to female subordination, were identified in Hong Kong television advertisements. Also, deterioration of female subordination was also spotted by comparing the results of current study with figures in previous researches.2016-01-01T00:00:00ZExperiential learning and the cultivation of critical thinking in liberal studies in Hong Kong secondary schoolLiu, Boni劉波妮http://hdl.handle.net/10722/2311222020-08-08T10:52:12Z2016-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Experiential learning and the cultivation of critical thinking in liberal studies in Hong Kong secondary school

Abstract: The rise of humanism has been found since the World War II. When brutality has spread across the world, it starts to make us revisit the question “how to be a human”. After witnessing the brutality of wars, one of the important missions for an educator is to educate students to be good citizens. This is the basic concept of citizenship. Citizenship education has not received much attention in Hong Kong. It is until 1990s the Hong Kong government starts to realize the importance of it. Facing a few times of failure and criticism, the Hong Kong government has received little credit for practicing citizenship education. Humanistic citizenship cultivation is seen as an empowerment to students. Integrating all the literature and findings, the author suggests that pre-service teachers practicing humanistic citizenship education may encounter the dominant discourse resisting the cultivation but at the same time assessment and scaffolding might provide a chance for the humanistic citizenship to thrive. This research aims to bring humanism into citizenship education. It will first define humanistic citizenship education. Then it will suggest challenges and opportunities in practicing it from a pre-service teacher’s perspective.2016-01-01T00:00:00ZThe trend of de-politicization in the liberal studies curriculum in Hong KongLin, Yiwen林逸雯http://hdl.handle.net/10722/2311232020-08-08T10:52:12Z2016-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: The trend of de-politicization in the liberal studies curriculum in Hong Kong
Authors: Lin, Yiwen; 林逸雯
Abstract: Liberal Studies as a senior secondary subject in Hong Kong is now facing a dilemma between its educational aim of cultivating self-determined individuals and an appeal for its de-politicization. The aggravated dissonance regarding the subject’s future development arouses this study to find out whether signs of de-politicization can be detected in its curriculum and textbooks, which could fundamentally alter the essence of this subject.
To investigate whether there the tendency of de-politicization is reflected in Liberal Studies, content analysis is conducted on the official curriculum documents and selected textbooks. A framework of four types of de-politicization is developed based on the conceptions of de-politicization from political science and schools of civic virtues from citizenship education. These four types, reduction, selection, deflection and neutrality, are identified with their characteristic and values promoted, and subdivided into more specific forms corresponding to various modalities of issue framing.
The results of the content analysis indicate that a neutral approach to de-politicization with maximal presentation of values is found widely used to address issue enquiry. The inconsistency between the politicized orientation in the curriculum and the de-politicized interpretation in textbooks is believed to be the result of deficient guidelines and exemplification on how moral reasoning can be made in the curriculum and the textbooks.2016-01-01T00:00:00Z
