Biography

William Tam is a Registered Architect in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, with Class 1 Registered Architect’s Qualification in the PRC.  He has almost thirty years of experience of architectural and urban design, design and development management in the United Kingdom, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Macau, and Singapore.

Architecture is a synthesis of art and technology.  It creates a sense of place both physical and spiritual. It serves us and our future generation with minimal impact on the environment. The success of it hinges on the fundamentals: functional requirements, respect for context, cultural backgrounds and climatic conditions. It requires knowledge, dedication and organization skills to take it from conception to completion. William’s works seek to encompass the above and stress on the collaborative aspects of making architecture with a strong emphasis on narratives, materials and technologies, all within the framework of budget and time.

William worked for London Dockland Development Corporation (LDDC) in the United Kingdom and Rocco Design Ltd. in Hong Kong. Since 2015, he set up ARVA Limited in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. William has been involved in a number of award-winning architectural projects including Chinese University Shenzhen Campus, Yunnan Museum in mainland China, Okura Hotel in Taipei, Chu Hai College, Tamar HKSAR Government Headquarters, Hotel Icon and 1 Peking Road in Hong Kong.

William has been involved in urbanism since his early days in the LDDC.  His recent urban projects include TOD at HuaShang Road station in Hefei, Beijing Road urban regeneration in Guangzhou, XiaGuan DaMa Road conservation in Nanjing and the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong.

He lectured widely on a range of subjects including urbanism, architectural typologies such as hotel, museum and TOD etc., and on architectural technologies, façade construction and passive sustainable methodology around the region in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Singapore.
