Short Biography:

Jinhyun Choo is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University, as a Fulbright Scholar, in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a minor in Mechanical Engineering. He then completed a year of postdoctoral training at Columbia University before joining the HKU faculty in 2018. Born and raised in South Korea, he earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Seoul National University and worked for three years at the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology.

Dr. Choo specializes in the areas of geomechanics and geotechnical engineering, seeking to broaden their interfaces with computational mechanics and subsurface hydrology. His work applies a computational lens to advancing engineering prediction of a broad range of subsurface problems as they relate to infrastructure resilience, energy resources, and environmental sustainability.

As an internationally active academic, Dr. Choo has been elected to be a full member of the Computational Geotechnics, Computational Mechanics, and Poromechanics committees of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He also serves as a member of the Numerical Methods, Geomechanics from Micro to Macro, and Energy Geotechnics committees of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.
