Short Biography:

After 30 years of academic experience in the United States, Dr. Tang joined the Faculty of Education, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in the summer of 2016 as the inaugural Director of the Laboratory of Neuroscience for Education (NfE Lab).   Tang is responsible for (1) the development and delivery of a strategic plan, specific research goals, and related research teaching programs; (2) recruitment and supervision of the NfE lab staff; (3) obtaining external funding to support NfE research; (4) providing expert guidance in the physical construction of the NfE lab; (5) overseeing the operation and safety of the NfE lab.

Prior to HKU, she first served for two years as the Program Director for the Cognitive Neuroscience Program at the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) conducting reviews of proposals, making funding recommendations, managing the CogNeuro portfolio, coordinating co-funding of highly interdisciplinary projects across units of NSF that span the fields of social, behavioral, and economic sciences, computer information science and engineering, biological sciences, and mathematical and physical sciences.  She further served as for one and half years as the China Program Director in the Office of International Science & Engineering, NSF, handling review, making funding recommendation, and managing a variety of China related awards for US-China collaboration across all disciplines represented by NSF.

Tang earned her first B.S. Degree in Computer Science from Peking University and a second B.S. Degree in Experimental Psychology from Grinnell College.  She received her PhD in psychology from Harvard University and did her postdoctoral work in the Computational Neurobiology Laboratory of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.  Prior to joining HKU, Tang was also a tenured associative professor at the University of New Mexico where she founded and directed both an animal research lab as well as a human high-density EEG source imaging lab to support concurrent animal and human research.  Dr. Tang had been a visiting professor for one year at the Neuroendocrinology Laboratory at the Rockefeller University and for another year at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London.

Dr. Tang takes the approach of trans-disciplinary and multilevel analysis in her investigation of problems in cognitive neuroscience using a wide range of research techniques (MEG, EEG, optimal recording, in vitro electrophysiology, computational modeling, neural networks, and behavioral analysis).  She has worked on neural mechanisms underlying learning and memory and neuromodulation in human and non-human mammals and invertebrates.  Her recent work deals with (a) enhancement of cognitive, social, emotional, and neural development in animal models and its translation to human development with focus on the role of early experience of stress; (b) development of high-density EEG based neural source imaging methods using recent signal processing tools with a focus on providing enabling tools for studying brain functions in children, elderly individuals, and patient populations in the real world context.
