Dr. Cannon joined the University of Hong Kong in August 2013 as Executive Vice-President (Administration and Finance). The new EVP post has been established to enable the University to cope with exciting opportunities and multifarious challenges ahead.
Dr. Cannon will act as the University’s principal officer to provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight for a portfolio that encompasses the management of fiscal affairs, as well as the direction and co-ordination of administrative operations inclusive of budget and finance management, human resources management for non-academic staff, facilities management, healthcare and safety management, and information technology services.
Prior to joining HKU, he had worked at the Universities of Warwick and Dundee, and was the Director of Finance and Strategic Corporate Affairs for the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council. In 1998, he was appointed Secretary to the University and Director of Operations at the University of Aberdeen, and was a core member overseeing changes, transformation and restructuring under the leadership of the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen. Dr. Cannon is on the Steering Group for Enhancing Learning and Research in Humanitarian Assistance (ELRHA) and was previously on the Steering Group for Delivery Partnership. He has been on the Boards of the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), Higher Education and Research Opportunities in the UK (HERO) and on the Governing Group of the Institutional Management in Higher Education (IMHE) Programme of the OECD. He is a member of Universities Scotland’s International Committee and is a former adviser to the Ministry of Education in Ethiopia and the Tertiary Council of Mauritius.
