If you do not see your publications here, please note:
  • We receive data from HKU's Research Output System (ROS), after you or your people enter data there. If you have entered, or are going to enter data into ROS, we do not want to enter them manually into the Hub, as it will create duplicates. When entering data into ROS, please remember to include the DOI or ISBN. It will help us match on outside sources, dedup, and bring in cleaner data than ROS supplies.
  • If you are NOT going to enter publication data into ROS, or if you have publications from before your time at HKU, please put them into an EndNote file and send to us, It will allow us to enter in batch. HKU has a site license for EndNote. You may google for "endnote@hku". HKU Libraries can instruct on Endnote, either in class or one on one,

Methodological innovations in imaging

A substantial part of my research is to develop new methods in neuroimaging analysis, to optimize the utilization of information in images. All of the kernels are in Matlab.


  • Tensor map assisted tissue classification --applied to Cheung C (2009); Cheung V (2008);

  • 2-D non-linear image registration for mouse DTI --applied to Li & Cheung (2010);

  • Automatic eye segmentation from T1 head scans;

Under development

  • Automatic dissection of human lateral and third ventricle;

  • Brain extraction for mouse;

  • Optical nerve angle measurement (manuscript in preparation);

  • Clinical diagnoses and treatment outcome prediction using SVM (GRF grant application 2011- co-investigator);


  • Anatomical Likelihood Estimation (ALE) is one of the new ways of MRI meta-analysis. However, generic ALE did not accommodate the effect of sample size. I successfully implemented a version of ALE to include weighting of sample size per each study. (Cheung C, 2010; Yu & Cheung, 2010; Leung & Cheung, 2009)

Animal research

  • My knowledge in human data was successfully translated into novel tools for automatic analysis of mouse T2 and DTI. (Li & Cheung 2009; Li & Cheung 2010)
