Biography

Peter Kutnick is Chair Professor of Psychology and Education, based in the Learning, Development and Diversity Division of the Faculty of Education at Hong Kong University. Previously, he has held senior academic positions at King’s College London, the University of Brighton, Roehampton University, the University of the West Indies (Trinidad), California State University and the University of Sussex. His research interests include: children’s social and interpersonal development within schools, attainment within classrooms (especially via effective group work), inclusion within early education and school-based engineering education. More specific research interests include the use of within-class groups for learning and social inclusion, large- and small-scale studies of factors affecting academic achievement in the UK and in the Caribbean, the development of social pedagogic theory and practical alternatives to traditional pedagogies, evaluations of education interventions – especially with regard to the promotion of engineering within secondary schools. Each of these research interests have received external funding and led to publications (books, monographs, refereed articles, etc.). He has published extensively, with over one hundred monographs, reports, journal articles and chapters. His books includeRelating to Learning (1983), Relationships in the Primary School Classroom (1988), Social Psychology of the Primary School (1990, with Colin Rogers), Groups in School (1994, with Colin Rogers), Promoting Effective Groupwork in Primary Schools (2009, with Ed Baines and Peter Blatchford) and Relational Approaches in Early Education (2008, with Maria Genta). He has been responsible for the development and running of PhD, EdD and other doctoral and Master’s programmes.
