Biography
Liver tumorigenesis composes of multistep processes involving the deregulation of a number of oncogenes, tumor suppressor molecules, and signaling pathways. Despite decades of efforts, liver cancer remains a deathly malignancy because of late disease detection and ineffective treatment options for inoperable patients. To tackle these clinical deficiencies, my research aims at decoding the molecular mechanisms of liver cancer. A variety of technological platforms including gene expression arrays, non-coding RNA profilings, next generation sequencing, and proteomics were performed to dissect the molecular compositions of liver tumors. With the collaborative efforts from clinicians, scientists and bioinformaticians, we have identified several biomarkers with potential use for diagnosis and prognosis of liver cancer. In addition, we have hallmarked Wnt/beta-catenin pathway as the most significantly altered pathway in liver cancer contributing up to 60% of total cases. Along this direction, our on-going research studies regulators for this pathway. The long-term goal will be on identification of cellular molecules capable of correcting the frequently altered Wnt/beta-catenin pathway in liver cancer, and for restoring the normal physiology of the liver environment.
