Professor Cheung, Martin Chi Hang 張知恒
I received my BSc degree in Biochemistry from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and PhD degree at the University of Nottingham in United Kindom. After 5 years of postdoctoral training at the National Institute for Medical Research in London, I returned to Hong Kong to develop my research programme as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong and was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2013. In 2019, I was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in School of Biomedical Sciences. I am one of the leading scientists in the field of neural crest development and have made seminal contributions to understanding the genetic regulation of neural crest progenitors formation, migration, and differentiation into the peripheral nervous system using chick embryos as the model organism, providing insight into the causes of congenital diseases and neural crest-derived melanoma pathogenesis. Most of our research findings were published in leading journals in the field such as Development, Developmental Cell, Stem Cell Reports, Journal of Experimental and Clinical Medicine, Oncogene, PNAS x 2 and Nature Communications, and have been featured in press release at the School, Faculty and University levels as well as in the local media. For the past 10 years, I have successfully secured 1 ECS, 7 GRFs, 1 NSFC and 2 HMRFs as a Principal Investigator. In 2018, I was nominated for the 19th ROYAN International Research Award, and received the Faculty Outstanding Research Output Award in 2019.
