This investigates an important ingredient of Hong Kong's social infrastructure. It aims at reconstructing their history, analysing their functions, forms and structures and the changes of these over time. The primary object is a better understanding of Hong Kong history, but the project also addresses itself to other issues such as the problem of ethnicity in multi-ethnic urban societies, the role of regional organizations in rural-to-urban migration, the comparative study of "Chinese" (including overseas Chinese) cities based on types of migratory patterns, the economic and social role of regional organizations in traditional China and the role of traditional forms of voluntary associations in rapidly changing social situations.
