2) To analyse the impact of print culture on Taiwanese literati writers’ conceptualisation of modernity and global imagination. 3) To shy away from the existing Western-focused, nation-centric approach by highlighting global knowledge diffusion and the roles of individual agencies. 4) To examine the signs of reform and innovation discernable in popular genres that remain understudied thus far, particularly in English-language scholarship. 5) To scrutinise the emergence and evolution of certain popular literary genres and media culture in colonial Taiwan.
