Objectives
1) Conduct a series of material tensile coupon tests to examine the material properties of very high strength steel with the nominal 0.2% proof stress between 700 MPa and 1100 MPa. 2) Conduct a series of beam-column tests on very high strength steel with the nominal 0.2% proof stresses of 700, 900 and 1100 MPa. Furthermore, concentric compression and pure bending tests will be conducted in order to obtain the full interaction curves. 3) Develop finite element model for beam-columns, and validate the model against the newly generated test results; 4) Perform an extensive parametric study for beam-columns, with variation of cross-section slenderness, column lengths and loading eccentricities; 5) Revisit the current section classification framework in Eurocode 3 (EC3, 2006) and propose new class limits for cold-formed high strength steel with the nominal 0.2% proof stress greater than 700 MPa; 6) Assess the existing design rules and propose new design methods for very high strength steel beam-columns of circular, square and rectangular hollow sections. Beam-column interaction curves will also be derived.
